Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain rulings made by the official, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
