Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
