Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
