The UK and US have concluded a important commercial pact that will keep zero tariffs on UK pharmaceutical exports going into the American market.

The Terms of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to increase funding on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge secures that tariffs on these crucial exports will remain at zero for a period of three years.

This deal comes after recent warnings to dramatically increase import taxes on patented drug products, with increases floated up to 100%.

"This agreement with the Britain bolsters the worldwide climate for new treatments and introduces long-overdue equity to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a release noted.

Commercial Importance

Medicines are one of the UK's most significant goods shipped to the United States, which is easily the largest buyer for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures show that in the one-year period to the end of the third quarter, the UK exported drugs valued at billions to the US. This figure made up 17.4% of British export trade in that span.

"This deal protects jobs, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a worldwide center for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Detailed UK Commitments

The deal includes several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will increase the cost ceiling at which it deems new medicines to be prohibitively costly by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to raise total health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The percentage drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at fifteen percent. Last year, refunds topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact takes place against a long-running tension between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over medicine costs and approval rates.

The disagreement were intensified by claims that American customers were charged several times more for the identical medicines than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been pledged toward US facilities.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS needed to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its total funding over the past decade.
